FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 8, 2017

VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX PROGRAM RELOCATED TO TEMPORARY LOCATION IN DOWNTOWN DC
Martin Luther King Jr., Library closed for renovations in March but program will continue to serve low-income tax payers during tax season.

Washington, DC, March 8, 2017– The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library closed its doors for renovations on March 4th 2017. It will remain closed for 3 years. Programs housed at the library have relocated, including the Volunteer Income Tax program operated by Community Tax Aid (CTA). The Library has housed this tax site for over 30 years, hosting the largest Volunteer Income Tax Preparation site in the Metropolitan Area. CTA serves over 2,000 low income tax payers every tax season at this location alone bringing back over $1.7 million in federal refund dollars to the local economy.

“We are sad that we cannot stay at the library for the entire season, but we are looking forward to serving new and longtime clients at the temporary location in Downtown DC at 15th and K Streets. It is important the community knows our volunteers will continue to prepare tax returns for low income tax payers at no cost and we look forward to joining the library in 2020 when it opens again!” – Teresa Hinze, Executive Director at Community Tax Aid.

The site, which was walk-in, first come, first served at the library will switch to an appointments system when it opens its doors at its temporary home on March 8th. Tax returns are prepared by IRS certified volunteers at no cost. The program serves taxpayers whose income is less than $54,000. Appointments can be made now by calling 202-869-2999 or by visiting Community Tax Aid’s website www.communitytaxaiddc.org/appointments. CTA also operates 14 other sites in DC, MD and VA serving over 7,000 low income tax payers during the tax season.

CTA is currently looking for space to host the site for the 2018, 2019, and 2020 tax seasons.

Community Tax Aid, Inc., was founded in 1987 by a group of tax professionals and concerned citizens who recognized a growing need for free tax preparation services for low-income taxpayers in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Over 500 volunteers donate their time each year to serve low income tax payers. CTA is celebrating its 30th tax season and is a partner with the DC EITC Campaign serving taxpayers in Washington, DC; Arlington and Alexandria in Virginia; and Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties in Maryland.
