First Year Preparer Registration & Training

REGISTRATION

  • Step 1: Before registering for training, you must register as a Tax Preparer.  Click here to register.
    (click here if you need more details on site locations.)
    Important Note: Each tax site and each shift can only take a limited number of first-year preparers. If too many have signed up for your preferred site or shift, you will be asked to select another shift and/or site.
  • Step 2: You will receive an email with the information needed to register for training. (If you need help with training registration, see “Step by Step Training Registration” below).

    • You will register for 3 “in person” classes. You MUST take the classes in the following order:
      – 01 First Year Tax Law
      – 02 First Year TaxWise
      – 03 First Year Wrap-Up

TRAINING

  • Step A: Before attending the First Year Tax Law class, you will complete approximately 2 hours of on-line, self-paced pre-training. Click here for more information.
  • Step B:  Attend 01 First Year Tax Law
  • Step C: Homework
  • Step D:  Attend 2nd in-person class: 02 First Year TaxWise
  • Step E: Homework.  Practice problem to help get you ready for the exam. (If you are taking the classes back to back, you will just do a quick review.)
  • Step F: Attend 03 First Year Wrap Up class where you review the facts in the homework problem to help you with the exam and where you will take your IRS certification exam.

PREPARE TO VOLUNTEER

  • Step 1: After completing your tax law exam, print your volunteer agreement following the certification instructions.
  • Step 2: Attend site orientation (don’t forget your Volunteer Agreement and photo ID).

Step By Step Training Registration:

  1. You will receive an email with the link to Tax Preparer Training classes.
  2. Click on the link in the email to see the list of classes. (Click here to see the training calendar.)
  3. You will see a list of classes sorted by date and time. To see all the dates a particular class is offered, click on “Event Name” to sort the list by class name.
  4. Click the link in your site confirmation email to register for training classes/
  5. Enter your email address and first name
  6. On the next screen enter your password (if you have not done so already, check your email for an email with your temporary password)
  7. Choose your first training class
  8. If you need to add another class, select your name in the drop down box (if you and your family member use the same phone number, you may see more than one name)
  9. Select the class from the list at the bottom of the page. (To use the search feature, use the search field at the bottom of the gray box)
  10. Scroll to the bottom of the page to see all of the events you are registered for.  [If you and another family member are using the same email address, you will see the events for everyone using that email address.]
  11. To log, out, look for the “Logout” link at the top of the page
